CAA ADMISSIONS GUIDE
CAA Personal Statement & CASAA Essay Guide: 2026–2027
The CAA personal statement is one of the few places in the application where admissions committees can hear directly from you rather than reviewing grades, test scores, prerequisites, and activity lists.
For applicants using CASAA, the main essay asks you to explain your motivation for a career in healthcare and specifically why you want to become an anesthesiologist assistant. It also asks you to connect your personal and professional background to your career goals and suitability for the profession.
The strongest CAA personal statements do more than say that you enjoy science, want to help people, or became interested in anesthesia after shadowing. They help the reader understand why CAA makes sense for you specifically and what your experiences have taught you about the profession.

What Is the CASAA Personal Statement Prompt?
CASAA asks applicants to write a brief statement explaining their motivation for selecting a healthcare career and, specifically, why they are interested in becoming an anesthesiologist assistant.
Applicants should also describe how their personal and professional background supports their career goals and makes them suited for the profession.
The CASAA essay is sent to every program you select. For that reason, it should generally be written for the CAA profession, not for one particular university. CASAA specifically recommends keeping the statement general even if you initially plan to apply to only one program.
CASAA essay limit: 4,500 characters, including spaces and punctuation. Once you submit your application, the CASAA essay cannot be edited.
What Should a CAA Personal Statement Accomplish?
There is no single formula for a strong CAA personal statement. Applicants have different backgrounds, motivations, clinical experiences, and paths to the profession.
However, an effective essay should leave the reader with clear answers to several important questions:
Why healthcare?
What experiences led you toward a career centered on patient care?
Why CAA specifically?
Why does the Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant profession fit your interests and goals better than simply saying you want to work in healthcare or anesthesia?
Do you understand the profession?
Your essay should reflect a realistic understanding of CAAs, anesthesia practice, and the physician-led anesthesia care team.
What experiences shaped you?
Use meaningful clinical, shadowing, work, service, leadership, academic, or life experiences as evidence.
What did you learn?
Reflection matters more than simply describing what happened.
Why are you prepared for the next step?
The essay should leave the reader with a sense of maturity, purpose, and readiness for professional training.
The goal is not to squeeze every accomplishment from your résumé into 4,500 characters. Select the experiences that best explain your motivation and development.
A Simple Structure for a CAA Personal Statement
Your personal statement should still sound like you, but a simple narrative structure can help prevent the essay from becoming a collection of unrelated experiences.
1. Establish the reason behind your path
Introduce the experience, realization, or progression that helps explain why healthcare—and eventually CAA—became meaningful to you.
2. Use experiences as evidence
Select two or three experiences that demonstrate how your understanding developed. These could involve shadowing, clinical work, service, research, leadership, employment, or meaningful life experiences.
3. Reflect instead of simply reporting
Instead of:
“I shadowed a CAA for 20 hours and observed several surgeries.”
the essay should answer questions such as:
What did you notice? What changed in your understanding? Why did the experience matter?
4. Make “Why CAA?” unmistakable
By the end of the essay, the reader should understand why you are pursuing the CAA profession specifically—not simply why you enjoy medicine, science, patient care, or anesthesia.
5. End forward
Bring the essay back to the kind of professional you are preparing to become and why your experiences have prepared you for the next stage of training.
What Makes “Why CAA?” Strong?
“Why CAA?” is usually the most important idea in the essay—and also one of the easiest places to become generic.
Statements such as “I love science,” “I want to help people,” or “I enjoy working in a fast-paced environment” may all be true, but none of them explains why the CAA profession is the right path.
A stronger answer connects your experiences to specific aspects of the profession: anesthesia, physiology, patient care, procedural medicine, teamwork, responsibility, communication, and practice within the physician-led anesthesia care team.
Shadowing can provide useful evidence, but avoid turning the essay into a description of everything you watched in the operating room. The more valuable question is what the experience taught you about the profession and about yourself.
Show, Don’t Just Tell
Applicants often describe themselves using words such as compassionate, resilient, hardworking, collaborative, or dedicated.
Those qualities are more convincing when the reader sees them through an actual experience.
Instead of telling the reader:
“I am resilient.”
describe a situation that required resilience, explain what you did, and show what changed as a result.
Instead of:
“I work well on a team.”
use an experience that shows how you communicated, adapted, accepted responsibility, resolved a problem, or supported others.
Specific evidence makes an essay more memorable and prevents it from sounding like a list of desirable traits.
Common CAA Personal Statement Mistakes
Writing a résumé in paragraph form. Your activities are already elsewhere in the application.
Giving a generic “I want to help people” explanation. Explain why CAA specifically.
Spending too much of the essay describing someone else's medical experience. The statement ultimately needs to reveal something about you.
Describing shadowing without reflection. What you learned matters more than the number of cases you watched.
Trying to mention every accomplishment. Depth is usually more valuable than quantity.

Overwriting. Complex vocabulary and dramatic language do not automatically make an essay stronger.
Submitting without proofreading. The essay cannot be edited after submission. Liaison Education Help
Losing your own voice. The final statement should sound like the applicant who will eventually sit in the interview.
Can You Use AI to Write a CAA Personal Statement?
Your personal statement should reflect your own experiences, ideas, and voice.
CASAA instructs applicants to use their own words and states that plagiarism may result in sanctions.
Individual programs may have stricter policies. Bluefield University/VCOM currently states that personal statements generated by artificial intelligence or written by another party will result in disqualification from its admissions process.
Feedback, editing, brainstorming, and coaching should help you communicate your own ideas more clearly—not replace your authorship.
Do CAA Programs Have Different Personal Statement Requirements?
Yes. The common CASAA essay is not necessarily the only writing an applicant may encounter.
Some programs rely primarily on the general CASAA personal statement. Others may include supplemental writing, secondary applications, literature assignments, or program-specific questions.
Always open the Program Materials for every school you select and review the program's current admissions website before assuming your writing requirements are complete.
| CAA Program | Writing Requirement | What to Know |
|---|---|---|
| CASAA | General personal essay | Maximum 4,500 characters, including spaces and punctuation. The essay is sent to all selected programs and should generally remain program-neutral. |
| Bluefield University / VCOM | Program-specific personal statement | Maximum one page. The program emphasizes insight, self-awareness, reflection, authenticity, patient-care motivation, and commitment to the AA profession. AI-generated or third-party-written statements result in disqualification. |
| Ohio Dominican University | CASAA personal statement | ODU currently requires the CASAA personal statement and does not require a separate supplemental application. |
| Nova Southeastern University | Separate anesthesia literature summary | Applicants currently submit a maximum one-page, typed, double-spaced summary of an article from current anesthesia literature and should be prepared to discuss it during the interview. This is a separate writing task, not another personal statement. |
How Long Should Your CAA Personal Statement Be?
CASAA allows a maximum of 4,500 characters including spaces and punctuation. That is a character limit—not a target you are required to hit exactly. Liaison Education Help
Use the space you need to tell a complete, focused story. Cutting useful reflection simply to make the essay shorter is not necessary, but adding repetitive language simply to approach the character limit does not improve the statement.
Because CASAA counts spaces, punctuation, and paragraph breaks toward the limit, always check the final version inside CASAA before submitting.
CAA Personal Statement Self-Review Checklist
Before submitting, ask yourself:
Does the essay clearly explain why CAA?
Could this essay accidentally be about PA, medical school, nursing, or another healthcare profession?
Does it show that I understand the CAA profession and anesthesia care team?
Did I use specific experiences rather than only making claims about myself?
Did I explain what those experiences taught me?
Is the essay primarily about me, rather than someone else's medical story?
Does the essay add information or perspective that isn't obvious from my résumé?
Does the writing sound like my natural voice?
Is the essay appropriate for every CASAA program receiving it?
Have I checked spelling, grammar, punctuation, and the 4,500-character limit?
Have I reviewed each school's Program Materials for additional writing requirements?
If you can answer all of those questions confidently, you are much closer to a focused and authentic final statement.
